The Urban Bottle Made to Last

Italians are known to merge taste with functionality and use this creativity to present the world with innovative and stylish products. This time not only form follows function, but it follows the environment as well. The Italian brand 24Bottles design goods that strive to reduce the impact on the environment and thus reducing Carbon Footprint. The stylish product range includes bottles, cups, bottle-holders backpacks and accessories that are designed in Bologna, Italy. The stainless steel products are then responsibly made in China while other products are produced in Europe. The Bottle Holder is 100% Italian-made using regenerated cotton and real leather.

24Bottles believe that good design can change things for the better and can help people improve their health and quality of life (as well as their look), in an environmentally friendly way. The company’s mission is to offer ‘uniquely lightweight collections that foster a more sustainable and comfortable lifestyle, while keeping personal style in check.’

At its core and inception, 24Bottles mission is to unburden the world from disposable plastic bottles, as well as to lighten the planet from the exaggerated amount of plastic waste that fills landfills all over the world. To use the founders words: When we see bottled water stored on the shelves of supermarkets, we are just looking at the tip of the iceberg. Consider that a huge process is necessary to make bottled water available in shops. This process goes from the production of the plastic bottle, to its filling, transport and storage, all the way to its disposal, after just a few hours of actual use. Each of these steps requires great quantities of energy and therefore produces pollution.

To solve this problem 24Bottles created an Urban Bottle that is built to last and offsets its own production after only a few re-fillings. When customers choose to go down the reusable and sustainable route, they are choosing to unburden the plant from disposable plastic bottles.

“Apart from offering a healthy solution for your daily hydration, our stainless steel bottles will also help you reduce your own carbon footprint. Day after day, every time you refill your Urban Bottle you will officially claim that you don’t need to rely on a disposable plastic bottle for your hydration.”

The Urban Bottle promises to reduce customers’ individual carbon footprint. To remind you of this the brand designed a special 500ml plastic bottle that indicates the amount of CO2 emitted in the production of one of these bottles. The number -0,08 (namely 0.08 Kg or 2.8 oz) printed on all 500ml Urban Bottles indicates the amount of CO2 emitted in the production of one single disposable 500ml plastic bottle. This number is therefore the quantity of CO2 you avoid releasing into the atmosphere every time you refill your Urban Bottle instead of buying a short-lived single use plastic bottle. 24Bottles lids and caps are also made from 100% BPA free plastic, the same used to produce baby bottles.

“80 grams (0,08Kg) is the quantity of CO2 released into the atmosphere for the production of a single-use plastic bottle.

It is also the quantity of CO2 you save from releasing into the atmosphere every time you choose to drink from your Urban Bottle instead of buying a disposable water bottle.”

Creatively speaking the brand is very attentive to the lightness in the creation of their designs and the overall aesthetics and material selection.

Other goods we design embrace the same philosophy. Comfort, simplicity and lightweight are defining characteristics of the brand. For example, the stainless steel bottles are crafted to be as lightweight as aluminum ones.

Taking their design into the realms of social partnerships, 24Bottles welcomes brands that are looking for a fashionable and functional solution to save money and raise productivity while taking care of the environment. To do this, they offer customized reusable stainless steel bottles to companies that want to enhance their brand image by using sustainable products and reducing their CO2 impact. The message is that re-usability can be convenient in terms of reducing toxic production loads as well as setting companies up on becoming more environmentally conscious. On their website the brand promises amongst other benefits a reduction in CO2 emissions, waste and corporate identity enhancement through corporate accountability.

Corporate responsibility is also very high on the brands values. Together with Reteclima® – an Italian non-profit organization that supports The Kyoto protocol in Italy – 24Bottles have assessed and certified that their Urban Bottle 500ml, from raw materials to production, packaging and transport, releases 543,3 grams of CO2 into the atmosphere. This is the equivalent of the production of just 6,46 plastic bottles of the same volume.

“The reduction of waste and pollution is the main goal behind our research for the most comfortable, reliable and sustainable designs.
Sustainability is about the relationship between humans and the environment. Every human activity unfortunately produces CO2, so it is up to us to improve our daily habits, in order to limit our damage and preserve the planet.”

This means that the Urban Bottle has net zero carbon footprint. In addition to this, the overall CO2 emissions coming from the production, packaging and transport of every single Urban Bottle are already offset through international reforestation projects through the Zero Emission Website. In the current year they neutralised 85kg of CO2eq through the reforestation of an urban area in the North of Italy. Another partner is WeCity a digital platform and app that promotes sustainable mobility by giving rewards to those who spare CO2 emissions by moving in sustainable ways such as bike, public transport and car sharing.
